About the Event

WORLD MUSIC MONTH AT THE QUARTER!

The Sanskrit word Anatma means "non-self", and An-Atma has a dual meaning of one soul, this doctrines are the signature of this band, where each artiste brings his own expressive and musical contribution to the whole creative flow.

It all began in 2015 when Daniele Di Pentima (drums) goes to Kolkata, fascinated by the Indian musical culture and the rhythmical intricacies of tabla playing, where he first meets Rohan Dasgupta (sitar).

In this occasion, they found many common interests towards arts and a similar sensitive way to feel the musical aesthetic.

Daniele left India with huge inspiration of new motivations and ideas. He then started to form new ideas of exchange to create a way to combine Indian classical music with jazz, without subordinating one to the other and vice-versa (as many musicians did in the past).

The first attempt of this project is in occasion of Daniele's conservatory graduation, where he plays supported by Riccardo Di Fiandra (bass) and Luigi Di Chiappari (piano) a few tunes picked from both Indian and jazz tradition, where he presents to the jury his thesis on how to blend this two different approaches to a common platform of improvisation. The occasion soon arises to concertize these studies and works, In 2016 when Rohan was on his European concert tour, Daniele decides to invite him and finally book a recording studio in Rome and form this project with Riccardo Di Fiandra and Luigi Di Chiappari in Bass and Piano. The great interplay and friendship of the jazz trio allow Rohan to fit comfortably in a totally new musical world, where he feels free to express himself without musical boundaries.

The starting idea of the recording was to play on a particular Hindustani raga named "Lalit".

Raga Lalit is a quite common raga in Indian Classical music, its time of playing refers to the very late night. After recording Raga Lalit, Daniele proposes a tune set on the same raga dedicated to the ragmala painting "Lalita". From now on all the remaining recordings are totally improvised in the recording studio without any formal rehearsals. The results are "Kolkatay stomp" inspired by a bass riff, "Bengal" a sweet ballad dedicated to this enchanting Indian region, inspired by Ravi Shankar and Rabindranatha Tagore, the "Lacrimosa", a thought to Paul Bley, and "Raga Zila Kafi" the last, where the band decides to play on a Dorian scale.

Since then the journey continues and the band is forming and exchanging newer ideas on a more deeper level of understanding keeping the respect towards each culture and schools of music.
