About the Artform

Building with terracotta, which is baked clay, is an ancient and traditional art form of the Indian sub-continent. An eco-friendly building material resource, it is known for its distinguishable natural hue and has usually been used to build walls and roofs, utensils or small effigies and figurines. Lantana is a weed that disrupts forests that are widely grown in waste lands of Karnataka. However, the wood in stick form can very well be used to build furniture and even sculptures!

Headstreams has created unique terracotta products using the versatile eco-friendly, basic terracotta building blocks called Kattoos bricks. These blocks made of natural materials are handcrafted by women in rural areas. Headstreams is a non-profit organisation that works with women and youth in rural areas and institutional settings to promote entrepreneurial mind-sets and support meaningful livelihoods, since 2008. This is achieved by creating exploratory learning spaces for design thinking, skill building and entrepreneurship development. The team which is involved in designing the bricks and the creative products will be conducting the workshop.
