About the Event

Dastan Tilism-e-Hoshruba

Dastangoi was a medieval art of storytelling from the persian world. It arrived in the Indian subcontinent around the 12th century and was soon patronised by Empower Akbar and then Nawabs of Lucknow and Rampur. Indian Storytellers made this form completely Indian by adapting the stories to Indian context.

Tilism-e-Hoshruba was the most popular and longest series of stories in this form. In this epic, on hand, there is Afrasiyab who is the king of magicians. Fighting his army of magicians is Amar Aiyaar, with his aiyaar (trickster) friends. Magicians try to trap Aiyaars into their magic, but Aiyaar use trickery and deception to overcome these situations.

This art form was extinct by the end of 1920s, but was revived during mid 2000s as a form of theatre. Kafeel Jafri, who is a trained theatre actor, is one of the few performers practising this art.

In this particular performance, he narrates one episode of Tillism-e- Hoshruba called "Dastan Mehtab Jadu ki". The literary narrative details and fantastic episodic events is what makes classic Dastangoi performance special.
