About the Event

One balmy afternoon, the famed Mangal Pandey, a sepoy of the 34th Bengal Native Infantry rose up against the British rule. For this, he was executed by the East India Company on the 8th of April, 1857. This event triggered a widespread ripple effect that engulfed the Raj in a series of mutinies across Hindustan.

Soon enough. soldiers from the 23rd Light Cavalry, 11th & 20th Infantry entered Delhi through the Raj Ghat gate, stood under the parapet of the Red Fort and hailed the eighty two year Bahadur Shah Zafar as the legitimate ruler and Commander in Chief of Hindustan. Delhi, under siege was virtually halved into the Walled City & the Delhi Ridge.

For almost four months – from the hottest through Ramzaan till the monsoons, the two sides battled to regain their claim. In this crossfire were caught it’s people and several historical sites that would be forever marked with the brutal assault of the Uprising.
