About the Event

Here we present three films from one of our favourite film-makers Gurvinder Singh. Anhey Ghorhey Da Daan, Chauthi Koot, and Adh Chanani Raat - are part of his thematic trilogy series based on Punjabi literature. The screenings will take place over the month of April on three selected Friday's at 7:30 PM.


All three films will be screened with English subtitles.


ARTIST BIO


Gurvinder Singh is a critically acclaimed experimental Indian film maker - he is best known for his contemporary Punjabi language films that explore the predicament of rural life in the state.


His directed his first fiction feature Anhey Ghorhey Da Daan (Alms for the Blind Horse) in 2011. The film premiered in the Orizzonti section (Horizons) at the 68th Venice International Film Festival. It travelled internationally across film festivals.


Subsequently, he directed his second feature Chauthi Koot (The Fourth Direction), an Indo-French co-production, which premiered in Un Certain Regard competition at the Cannes Film Festival in 2015.


His most recent Punjabi feature is Adh Chanani Raat (Crescent Night) and was invited at the 51st International Film Festival Rotterdam.

A day in the life of a family in a village in Punjab as they deal with social and labor trials and inequities, leading to a night of a lunar eclipse. Based on the Punjabi novel of the same title published in 1976 by Gurdial Singh.

Modan returns home after 15 years in prison for a murder committed to avenge his father's humiliation. Altered familial equations force him to rebuild his life with his frail mother and a new wife who's already a mother to a son. In spite of his honest attempts to forget the insults of the past, suppressed anger manifests itself in renewed violence. Based on the Punjabi novel of the same title published in 1996 by Gurdial Singh.

The event consists of three screenings that will take place across April on three selected dates. Interested event-goers can purchase a festival pass to attend all three screenings at a discounted rate, or individual tickets for each screening.


All three films will be screened with English subtitles.
