About the Event

Gajendra Moksha Lila - Kalamkari Painting

Kalamkari Art Form, The word Kalamkari comes from the Kalam, which means pen, and Kari, which means work. The folk art form originated in the state of Andhra Pradesh. It was traditionally painted onto a cotton or silk fabric with the help of a bamboo pen by using natural or vegetable dyes. There are two main styles of Kalamkari- the block printed that is practiced in the town of Machilipatnam and the hand-painted style that is largely practiced in the town of Srikalahasti. The subjects of this artwork were originally the traditional epics of our Indian Culture- from Mahabharat and Ramayan.
