Godna or ‘Tattooing’ is an age old tradition in India, especially in the Tribal societies.  The practice of Tattooing among tribes was prevalent through the lengths and breadths of the country, across many communities. They acted as a mark of distinction that allowed to differentiate one individual, ethinic group and culture from another. For example, the Bhil tribe in Madhya Pradesh have tattoos of Bird and Scorpions while the Women of Baiga tribe have a ‘v’ mark in the centre of their forehead.

Contemporary Indian Society has continued the prehistoric culture of Tattooing through Art.

The Madhubani Godna is an artistic expression invented by the Mithila women in Gypsy groups. The Godna works are done in the form of Mandala or concentric circles, where the women would depict patterns from their lives, nature, tattoo’s, their local deities and like.
