HE WHO GETS SLAPPED (1925) Dir. Victor Sjostrum
'He’, is one of the greatest silent productions of its time. Chaney plays Paul Beaumont, a scientist under the patronage of Baron Regnard who finally proclaims that he has proven his groundbreaking scientific theories. The Baron tricks him, passing the theories off as his own, stealing his wife, and slapping and humiliating him in front of his peers. Reduced to pitifully laughing at the sick irony of his fate, Paul turns his back on his old life and becomes a circus clown. He soon becomes the biggest attraction, and falls in love with the daughter of another baron, who has joined the circus as a bareback rider. However, when Regnard returns to try and buy the girl as his wife, Paul decides to take his overdue revenge.
The final scenes of a fatally wounded Chaney, staggering out for one last bow to his adoring and unaware public, before collapsing to the floor, is one of the great moments in Hollywood cinema of its decade.
THE UNKNOWN (1927) Dir. Tod Browning
Alonzo The Armless Wonder (Lon Chaney) is a circus sideshow attraction who with his feet throws knives at his assistant, Nanon (Joan Crawford). She has a deep seated fear of being touched by men; naturally she becomes the object of his desires. Offstage though, Alonzo is not at all who he appears to be. The character of Alonzo is one of Chaney’s most intense and disturbing creations and the most macabre film in his ten-year association with director Tod Browning.
Chaney worked with real-life armless double Paul Desmuke, whose legs and feet were used to manipulate objects such as knives and cigarettes in frame with Chaney's upper body and face.
Stefan Kaye
Stefan Kaye is British emigre, composer, musician and actor based in Delhi. He is the founding member of Delhi based bands 'The Ska Vengers' and 'The Jass B'stards' and is also known to a lesser extent as his DJ alias 'Flexi K'. He is working on a musical revue based on the songs of Serge Gainsbourg (production date March 2018) and musical cabaret 'The Medicine Show'.
