About the Event

Around the world stories speak a similar language, yet are unique to their culture.

Peek-A-Book, Kathai Kalatta and Avid Learning present an International Storytelling Masterclass featuring award-winning performers and educators Dianne Ferlatte and Dr. Margaret Read Macdonald who will share two unique aspects in performance and immersive storytelling techniques.

Grammy nominated Dianne Ferlatte will focus on Pitch-Pace-Pause – how to use your most important instrument in oral storytelling – your voice. Find you authentic voice, as well as learn to create multiple ones. Learn the tricks of pitch, pace and pause to create just the right effect. And discover the power of the dialogue.

Margaret Read Macdonald draws upon her expertise as a folklorist to outline techniques that allow retelling for all audiences. Using specific stories she will elaborate on narration as well as audience participation leaving participants ready-to-tell

Join us for an interactive session that combines narrative, movement and drama while bringing stories to life!

About the Instructor
Diane Ferlatte is a multi-award winning performer who has captivated audiences across six continents. In addition to historical and personals stories, Diane draws from a deep well of folktales, myths, legends and fables to inform, entertain and inspire all. While many of her stories and songs have African and African American roots, she loves to tell any story that holds truths touching upon our common humanity, our history and our culture. She believes that telling and listening to each other’s stories not only enables us to learn about each other, but also to understand each other better.
The “Grand Dame” of storytelling Margaret Read Macdonald is a former librarian, folklorist, educator and prolific writer of children’s books. Drawing on her background in folklore (Ph.D. Indiana University Folklore Institute) and her many travels throughout the world, MacDonald searches out unusual tales from the world’s folk literature and oral traditions. She has a gift for retelling these stories so they appeal to children and adults alike. Margaret is a prolific writer and performer, having published over 55 books. In addition to this she teaches her craft at the University of Washington in the US.
