About the Event

Hiranyagarbha presents Kamakhya - a complete documentary

In one of the 51 Shakti Peethas and 4 Adi Shakti Peethas, the Kamakhya temple is special because the womb and vagina of Goddess Sati fell here and thus Goddess Kamakhya is called the Goddess of Fertility or "Bleeding Goddess" There is also a temple of Dasamahavidya in the premises of this temple. These temples also have temples of Dashamahavidya i.e. Kali, Tara, Shorashi, Bhubaneswari, Bhairabi, Dhumavati, Chhinnamasta, Baglamukhi, Matangi and Goddess Kamala. Among them Tripurasundari, Matangi and Kamala were worshiped in the main temple. There are separate temples for other goddesses. This temple is a holy pilgrimage for Hindus, especially Tantric devotees. In ancient times, Kamakhya was a place of sacrifice for the Khasi tribe. Sacrifice is still a part of worship here. Many devotees here sacrifice goats for the goddess.

According to the Kalika Purana, worship in Kamakhya fulfills all desires. Shiva's young wife and liberating power is known as Kamakhya. The first Tantric temple, Kamakhya, was destroyed by the Mongols during the invasion of the Nilachal Mountains in 12 BC. The second Tantric temple was destroyed during the Muslim invasion. Like other goddesses in Assam, the worship of the goddess Kamakhya is a mixture of Aryan and non-Aryan cultures. The names of the goddesses worshiped include many local Aryan and non-Aryan deities. According to the Yogini Tantra, the source of the religion of this Yogini Peetha is the religion of the Kirats. According to Banikanta Kakti, people of the Garo tribe used to sacrifice pigs in Kamakhya. This practice was also seen among the priests appointed by Naranarayana. The worship of Kamakhya is done according to both Bamachar and Dakshinachar. Usually worship is done with flowers. Sometimes animal sacrifices are done. Although female animal sacrifices are generally prohibited, many animal sacrifices are exempt from this rule.
