About the Event

Mexican Folk Art Workshop

One of the most appreciated aspects of Mexican Folk Art is its great variety. This diversity is not only because of the difference between communities but also for the great variety of raw materials available in the country.

Mexican folk art, also called as Artesania, often has a practical purpose independent of decoration. The state of Oaxaca is best known for its traditional Mexican folk art, but every region offers its own distinctive style.

One of the key characteristics of Mexican art is brightly coloured paintings and jewellery featuring a bounty of flora and fauna. These vibrantly coloured plants and dense, lush forests are prominently featured. Also prominently featured were many different creatures, including animals such as: Birds, Fishes, Lizards and Cats.

These animals were featured in all types of Mexican artwork, but maybe most notably in alebrijes, which are brightly coloured Mexican folk art sculptures. These also often featured fantasy and mythical creatures. How fun!

You will be working on the animals inspired Mexican Folk Art in this painting workshop using acrylic colours on cartridge sheets.
