Originated in the town of Nathdwara near Udaipur, Pichwai Paintings are intricate paintings that beautifully depict the life tales of Lord Krishna. This explains why subjects like gopis, cows, lotuses are some recurrent motifs. The word Pichwai, if broken down means a textile hanging (wai) at the back (pichh). Every festival in which Lord Krishna is celebrated such as Sharad Purnima, Raas Leela, Annakoot or Govardhan Puja, Janmashtami, Gopashtami, Nand Mahotsav, Diwali, and Holi, all of these are painted as the Pichwai to add to the celebration.
