About the Event

Sukanya and Tejas invite you home for an intimate discussion about Hindustani classical music. In an effort to bring classical music closer to people, and to encourage artists in their imaginative pursuits; we are opening up our living room for a monthly workshop on music appreciation.

Join us for an in-depth discussion on the basics of classical music, and what to watch out for while listening to a performance. Classical music is a moving, meditative art form. The more you understand its complexities, the more enjoyable the experience becomes. However, this understanding of the genre can take years to attain through a traditional process of learning music - where the emphasis is on learning to express yourself musically, rather than learning to listen. In our workshops, we will approach classical music strictly from the perspective of the audience - prioritising a conceptual understanding of a performance over theoretical specifics that give the artist expertise.

This month, our focus will be on understanding the basic structure of a classical performance and studying its various components. Thereafter, each of these aspects would become subjects of a dedicated workshop.

No discussion is ever complete without a steady supply of hot tea and snacks - this will be no different. Our living room is cosy, and has just enough space for everyone to be able to enjoy the music and compare notes with each other from time to time. We look forward to your questions, and a healthy discussion.

FAQs
Do I have to be a trained musician to attend this workshop?
Absolutely not! Anybody who appreciates music and is willing to listen, is welcome. Our aim is to make the genre more accessible to everyone and share our love for it. During the course of the workshop we will be happy to help you understand and appreciate a Hindustani classical performance.
What is the format of the program?
Keeping in mind the homely atmosphere, the workshop will be structured as an interactive session. We suggest you bring a notebook and a pen to keep track of your thoughts and ask as many questions as possible to keep the discussion alive.
What kind of food would be served?
We would love to share a little piece of our home with you. All food served at the event will be cooked by us from scratch. In order to accommodate everyone and their tastes, we will only be serving vegetarian food - typically typically light snacks and tea.
