About the Event

Long before TVs or films were invented, Tholu Bommalata used to be one of the major forms of storytelling for the people of Andhra Pradesh. The leather puppets would be designed to look like Rama or Ravana, the mythical figures of Indian folklore. Late into the night, the puppets would dance, accompanied with the beat of traditional drums and a melodious narrative. Tholu Bommalata is appreciated for its incredible history and exquisite beauty.

Witness this magical Tholubommalata (Leather Puppetry) Artform Live!

Tholu bommalata literally means the dance (atta) of the leather (tholu) puppets (bommalu). The core of the performance is represented by mythological stories. The performance will be of 1 hour duration and includes puppet skits and is accompanied by live music. On the stage the puppets appear behind a white curtain, and the audience sees their coloured shadows enlivened by a light source.

DIY - Try your hand at this craft

We also will have DIY stations where you can try your hand at painting on parchment leather and get a peek into the process of how these leather puppets are made first hand.
