About the Event

 Unstitched Books

Facilitated by Nidhi Khurana

Part of Methods Workshop Series

27 April 2024

2:00 – 6:00 pm

KNMA Saket

What is a book? Is it defined by format or content? In this workshop, participants will learn how to make unique book structures without depending on conventional book binding formats including the use of thread and stitching. Instead, the books will be constructed through the process of folding and assembling paper. Participants will also take part in a series of drawing exercises to generate ideas for their individual books. Interested and committed participants (18+) are expected to attend the entire duration of the workshop. Art material and refreshments will be provided. The onsite workshop with limited seats will be held at KNMA Saket.

Nidhi Khurana is an Indian artist and educator based in New Delhi. Her studio work takes the form of drawings, textiles, carpets, prints, artist-books, and sculptures to reflect upon the role of the human within nature. In 2023 Nidhi was a Fellow Artist in Residence at The Institute of Advanced Studies, Central European University, Budapest in 2023. In 2022, Nidhi was an artist resident at the Westwerk Artist Residency Program, Hamburg, for three months where she collaborated with an astrophysics researcher from Hamburg University. Her project was funded by the Ministry of Media and Culture, Hamburg, Germany.

She completed a year-long Artist residency program at the Hochschule fur Bildende Kunste Braunschweig, funded by the State of Lower Saxony (BS Projects Scholarship 2018-19) Germany. She was awarded the Mexican Government Scholarship by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for a residency in Oaxaca, Mexico in 2015-16.

In her recent works she explores her relationship with the natural world by mapping her experiences as cyclical graphs of time, inspired by a diversity in cognitive approaches such as the Australian aboriginal dreamtime, the Mappaemundi, the yatra (pilgrimage) maps, representations from Islamic cosmological diagrams and illuminated manuscripts. Nidhi uses natural dyes, 24 carat gold and silver, handmade paper and silk to document her experience of the world.
