The piece evolved from the idea of space, which then transformed into the Waiting Room, which then became the connecting piece for several contrasting sections you’ll be witnessing in the performance. Each segment, distinct and complete in itself. 

The development of the piece was partly intuitive and partly structured.

Waiting Room explores voice, somatics, text, rhythm, space, narrative, and humor.

About the makers:

Ritu Varier: I'm a contemporary dancer, creator, and arts manager. After having completed my BA (Hons) in Contemporary Dance + Arts Management, I have been working on full-length dance theatres.

I like to work closely with emotions and stories. My work is deeply rooted in the idea of how much the human body can express with movement and by just being.

Somya Kautia: I’m an India-based contemporary dancer and movement practitioner with over 8+ years of experience. The body’s capability of how much or how little needs to be done to communicate, lends itself strongly to my creative process.

Over time I have built my individual research in contemporary dance and have developed a pedagogy for movement and improvisation. Through teaching, I strive to cultivate a curiosity among individuals to explore with their bodies and create a space for research while bringing attention and consciousness to movement and its source; which I believe bridges training and performance.
